Cleaning & Caring For Your Sex Toys

Cleaning & Caring For Your Sex Toys

Posted by Daisy Lawrence on

One of the most important considerations when purchasing a sex toy is how to keep it clean and safe to use. Cleanliness is especially crucial if you intend to use them with more than one partner or on different parts of the body. Since sex toys come in various materials, one method may not apply to all toys. It also depends on whether the toy is battery-operated or electrically powered (e.g. electric shock).

Most toys come with special cleaning instructions, so be sure to follow those in addition to the tips provided here. Simple rules to follow are:

  • Don't submerge the part of the toy that holds the battery in water.
  • Remove batteries before cleaning and leave them out if the toy isn't used for long periods.
  • Avoid using oil products with latex; use only water-based products.
  • Don't immerse electrical sex toys in water.
  • Don't let sex toys touch each other when stored. A quick and cost-effective solution is to store them in individual socks.

Here are the different materials used to manufacture sex toys and the best methods for cleaning each one. We do suggest you follow the manufacturer's instructions at all times.

Electrical Toys

As these toys cannot be immersed in water, clean them using a damp, soapy cloth (preferably with antibacterial soap) and then allow them to air dry. Store in a clean, dry place.

Acrylic

Usually used for PC muscle-strengthening toys. Wash with warm water and antibacterial soap, and sterilize using an alcohol-soaked cotton ball (rinse well afterward).

Silicone

Silicone toys can be washed with warm, soapy water and sterilized using a sterilizer often used for baby bottles. Alternatively, they can be run through a dishwasher or boiled for 2-10 minutes.

Rubber

As rubber is more porous than silicone and can contain harmful chemicals (i.e., phthalates), it's recommended to use a condom with a rubber dildo. Wash with soap and water after use.

Plastic

Clean with antibacterial soap. Do not boil. Alternatively, use alcohol and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Stainless Steel

Use warm soapy water, boil for 10 minutes, soak in a 50/50 solution of water and bleach for 10 minutes, or run through the dishwasher. Buff with a dry cloth.

Leather

Wash with warm, soapy water to remove all grease and grime. When dry, use saddle soap on a cloth to keep the leather supple and protected. Store leather in a cool, dry place to prevent mold formation.

Nylon

For harnesses and toys, wash in warm, soapy water, rinse, and allow to dry naturally.

Cyberskin & Vinyl

Wash gently with warm water only. Allow to dry and sprinkle some cornstarch over it to prevent stickiness.

Glass

Can be washed with warm, soapy water or placed in the dishwasher. Allow to dry naturally.

Jelly

Clean jelly toys with warm water only. Do not use soap.

You can also buy special sex toy cleaners that specify the types of toys they can be used for.
